Amazing Hardware small with only one real weakness
I purchased my from Apple as a Refubished unit. my cost was $400. Typically they now sell for $599 for this unit. Do not buy the only listed here as it is seriously over-priced.


The Mac Mini is a joke right? I have a Mac Pro with 4TB of disk space and 15GB or RAM and yet even with this awesome computer, I still decided to buy a Mac Mini, and I'd like to have a dozen more.

There are always times when you wished you had small computer, one that does not use much electricity (2-3 watts at idle), and one that can perform 95% of what you want it to do. This is it.

The Mac Mini is an upgradeable computer. It is easy to add up to 3GB of memory ($70), a bigger hard-drive up to 320GB right now ($150) and soon, a new 500GB ($300) notebook drive is expected to be released, and even the CPU can be upgraded to a max of 2.33GHz--pricey, but something to keep in mind as CPU prices keep falling--you will be able to beef up this computer such that it will work well for many years. I found this one of the easiest computers to work on for doing upgrades yourself. Do a Gooogle Search and you will see that lots of people publish tips and tricks for working on these machines.

People are putting these machines in cars, on boats, of as supplemental computers hooked up to free monitors like your new flat screen TV. Mine is hooked up to a 50" Sony.

The MAC OS X operating system is fabulous, and easy to use. It is a snap to change font sizes so you can read the screen from across the room. You can change screen resolutions with a couple of clicks too.

What else is great. It is so very easy to operate one MAC from another. This alone makes this a worthy addition to your network. I plan to use mine as an Internet Web Server. You don't even need a monitor to run this computer remotely, after a few configuration changes are made. Running a Mac Mini (headless--no monitor) is common among those who use these to run servers, because it is easy to open up a window to run it remotely, from anywhere! Add a larger Firewire 400 or USB drive a a Time Machine Backup Drive, and you have an easy to use, easy to maintain, server with good backup protection.

These machines are 6.5"x6.5"x2". That is small. You can put one anywhere. Mounting cages are available to install these on the back of your old LCD monitor. That gets it off your deck and out of the way, yet still in an accessible location.

You will need a keyboard and mouse. I like the wireless keyboard and mouse that Apple sells. Their wired keyboard is nice too. You can pick these up on eBay for 1/3 of what Apple sells them for.

Ok, so what is the negative. The built-in graphics card is a bit lame, but not totally useless. Unfortunately, you can't upgrade the video. it does include a DVI output and a conversion adapter for a VGA type cable. So while you won't want this machine for extreme gaming, it is not bad for most games that are not cutting edge,and it works great for any other applications.

These are Intel processors, so feel free to install a bigger hard drive and split it in half for Windows, and OS X.

Great Hardware, great OS. Small machine, small price. Buy two today.

Goodbye Windows!
I've had the Mac Mini for only a few days. Initial setup was effortless. In the past I have used Windows 95, 98, ME, and XP. All of the Windows operating systems operated well, sometimes. I suppose I just got used to all the usual hassle of those systems. Right out of the box this Mac Mini blows them all away. It makes almost no noise, takes up almost no space, and it is faster than what I was used to. It comes with lots of really cool programs for music, photos, movies, and more. The factory installed ethernet card is great, one less thing for me to do. The only thing I had a problem with is the plain jane Quick Time player. It has very few options, and you have to buy Quick Time Pro to really use it. I installed the Windows media player( get a Mac version on the net for free) and it works great. Time will tell, but so far so good. Don't be afraid to buy a Mac because you are used to Windows operating systems. There really is not a huge difference. A computer is a computer. I do not believe you would be disappointed with the Mac Mini(how do they fit it all in such a small package??).

Tested and Proven
I started using these machines when the head of our company needed an HTPC for his house (He now has a Z545 and a Z560 in separate rooms both sharing libraries on a networked drive). After experimenting with them for quite some time I decided to get one for myself. The Specs are not the newest/greatest available, but that is only because they aren't produced anymore. The form factor is perfect (about the size of a good stereo receiver), and there are plenty of In/Outs. I personally have the signal split between my Bedroom and Living room and it is great. I highly recommend this product.

Cons: As with all electronics heat is an issue, the recommended 2 inches of clearance is not enough, give it some breathing room and you will be fine.

Recommended upgrades for the machine:
1. A MUCH larger hard drive, the 320gb it comes with only holds so much, and it will perform better if your media is housed in an external SATA drive anyway.
2. Blu Ray Drive, the outputted video is beautiful over HDMI if you are that serious about full HD.

Best $550.00 I ever spent on electronics
Buy it! I liked it so much I bought another for my kids tv. It shouldn't be confused with a full time web browser. It is a computer, but it should be used inside the envelope it was intended. It is a DVR, digital media handler, and multi tuner TV with FM stereo. I have it digitally connected to 7.1 surround sound and a large screen plasma TV. It works very well. It does the job of tivo without a subscription fee, it allows access to downloading movies on demand (Movielink and Cinemanow) and the tv "guide" which you download for free gives all the info that you would get from digital cable. It is marvelous use of computer tech applied to TV.

You can access the web, but viewing the web with an HD screen as large as mine makes it hard to read. You have to adjust the resolution down to be able to see the web pages clearly. To use the viseo and TV functions you have to re-adjust the resolution back to hi-res. It's a bother to do that. USe it as it was intended and it's great. Buy it at the low closeout price NOW while you can.

i've owned a velocity micro PC for the past 4 years.if you decide to buy from them, make sure you get the extended warranty.my pc was a lemon from the first month we got it. it has had constant problems that they don't seem to be able to fix. it got repaired numerous times for the same thing and it kept breaking. even after using other brand components, it still broke down. it has been one big headache and is now outside the warranty and it's breaking down again. same problem, too. now they tell me what they think is wrong with it but won't fix it as it should have been done from the beginning. I've had numerous techs out to the house to repair it and the last time it was sent back to the factory for them to fix it. still has the same problems. this doesn't include some of the other items that went bad too. dvd drive...card reader..etc...avoid.

Totally thrilled with the HP Pavillion M8400F. Speedy,quiet and a breeze to install. I previously owned a Dell, but this is a monster machine.

This review is for the 'non' computer type people who are still window shoping and really don't understand the 'hype' behind the product discription and the reviews below it. This entire review is basically pros and cons covering the first three days and nights. 'What you, a non computer person, is going to go through'. BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE...make an emergency backup/startup disk. Do this BEFORE you install or update anything.

PROS:

1. Yes, it will multitask (single core computers usually only do 'single' things at a time...this is a quad core--it can do 3 or 4 things at time time without slowing down)
2. Yes, it does seem to run a lot smoother when compaired to a single core--no freezing up, shuttering, studdering, crashing, etc..
3. Yes, it has Vista (that isn't a big thing to me)
4. Yes, this is probably the best 'bang per buck' computer you'll find--that's why I got it and that's why I gave it five stars.
5. All in all, when compared with my Hp Media Center (single core) with one gigabyte of ram...........this quad core is twice the computer. My single core always shuttered, single frame, freeze up and occasionally crashed back to desktop. (Crashed back to desktop means the program I was running--stopped running).

CONS:
1. For the price, there really isn't much in the way of CONS.
2. I'd like to know, 'what lame brain' designed a black keyboard with white letters and numbers? You know, after a life time of going to school, reading books, and writing some of those books--I can honestly say...I can read and write pretty easy simple because I always used white paper to write and read on, and black pencil and ink to write with or read.............THEN, some idiot comes out with a keyboard that's black with white letters and numbers--instead of a white keyboard with black letters and numbers. Do they actually think this is better? It's hard to see and read like that.
3. What lame brain designed that keyboard with 'low profile' keys? I'm a touch typiest and half the time I use this keyboard I can't tell if my thumbs are on the spacebar or on the keyboard casing below.

NOW FOR VISTA

1. When you get this computer do only this--download, download,download, and .... more down loads. DON'T install anything until you have. That will take you about three days and nights.
2. There are a number of programs on this computer Vista doesn't reconize...you have to get downloads off the internet to get them to run properly. (If you don't have internet...don't ask me what you should do). I would think a program would not have been factory installed on a computer--unless it would run on that computer without any updates...or...wouldn't be installed on a computer that doesn't reconize it.
3. When I plugged my computer in, and the monitor displayed something asking me about 'set up', I clicked the button. The harddrive flashed it's yellow light for a minute and then stopped. I set there for half an hour--staring at the monitor--waiting for the computer to do something...anything...or tell me to do something...ANYTHING. Did it? Nope. I moved the cursor around the screen until I noticed an area at the top left 'seemed' to lighten its color some. I clicked on it and was taken to the normal desktop display on the monitor. This is something all you newbies need to remember--Vista does not 'always' tell you what to do, futher, a lot of the 'control' areas on the monitor (the places where you click on) are faded and hard to see.
4. Vista seems packed with pastel colors. (pastel colors are basically faded colors...most of them are several colors mixed together to make a third color.) Example: You remember that 'box of 8' crayons you had in school...you won't be seeing those colors on Vista. You remember that 'box of 48' crayons?...that's what you will see.
--this is another way of saying, the image is not sharp...it looks faded. For us people in low light levels--wearing glasses--this is hard to see. Even the written words appear faded and hard to read.
5. There is a lot of 'little' things I could list about these faded colors...but you get the idea--it's hard to see and read sometimes.
six. Another problem is the basic design of this program. Example: you remember on your last computer, when you defragged your system, you could actually 'see' it defraging the computer? It probably told you how much had been defragged, how much was left, maybe a visual repersentation of it actually doing the defragging? Well.....you can forget that. Now, you click 'defrag' and.........that's it! You don't know if its doing its job or not. It doesn't take you to another page to watch it working, it doesn't tell you how much has been done...nope. You are left there, staring at the screen, wondering--is this thing still running? Is it frozen? Is it about to blow up? Should I pray to GOD? The only indication I got was a little 'swirling' blue circle around the cursor. This suppose to tell me the program is running. THATS IT! That little blue swirl is you only proof some of the programs are still running. So, get use to it.
7. The blue screen of death. Yep, it's still with us. My second day of running this computer I saw it three times in twenty four hours. I had installed only one program. Yesterday I think I found out what was causing it. The soft modem needed an update. The reason for the update listed "...stops intermittent crashes and the blue screen..." Now, twenty four hours later, I haven't seen that blue screen of death yet. Maybe it's gone away?
8. Finally, you remember on all your older computers, you would have to sign up for internet using one program, set your dial up on another program, attach your modem with still another program (and update its drivers)? Well, that kind of problem is on Vista to. I know why they do it...I just wish they would do something to change it. It would have helped if they would give us a 'command key card' or some other 'basic' instruction sheet (not a manual type book) on how to find these things for the first week of operation. A lot of the problems caused in these computers is from us clicking on the wrong program or button to do something during the first week.

All in all, I like this computer, and I will adapt to Vista--I did give them five stars. If you are using a single core computer--this quad core is the best 'next' basic upgrade for all computers...but like all new computer systems you've owned--it brings its own problems you will overcome in about one week.

Awesome bang for the buck
I purchased this HP desktop for my son to replace his 3yo home-built that bit the dust. The m8400f's 2.2GHz quad-core AMD Phenom CPU is the bomb. A pair of Seagate 360GB SATA's provide scads of storage space. 3GB of RAM is nice, and the nVidia GeForce 8500 GT graphics are great. Vista already had SP1 applied, but the normal hokey pokey of Windows updates (on top of updates on top of updates on top of ...) will still be necessary before you get a clean bill of health. Block out another hour or so to remove all the craplets and trial offers.

I can't stress strongly enough to take advantage of the prompt to create recovery DVDs. If you ever have a hard disk problem, this will be your only means of recovery.

In reference to a previous review, note that my m8400f *included* a DVI-VGA adapter in the box. The integrated VGA port is disabled due to the addition of the nVidia GeForce 8500 GT adapter (HDMI, DVI, and S-Video outputs, but no VGA port.)

All-in-all, I would positively recommend HP's Pavilion m8400f!

MACs are great!
I run a computer lab at school with 30 IMac flat screens. They are going on 7 years old and still running in great shape. I also have a Mac and a Dell laptop. I am on computers all day long and also repair and maintain the lab. My Dell laptop is only 3 years old and has had 3 screens, and 2keyboards replaced. The feel of the keys when you type is so much smoother on the Mac and if you work with graphics or photos the Mac is far more superior. They are by far the best.

works ok, but too expensive
instead of buying the imac 20", buy a mac mini, a 20" monitor from any half-decent manufacturer, and a keyboard/mouse. it will cost less than half as much and work just as well.

Best desktop on the market
Without a doubt, this is the best desktop computer on the market today. The price point is excellent, the software bundle is incredible, and the all-in-one design from Apple is beautiful. The only bad thing is is that if you go with the iMac instead of a Dell machine, you won't be able to spend time on finding device drivers, updating your virus software, and rebooting after every single program installation. Get a Mac! It just works.

Ideal set top box
I bought this device with one purpose in mind - a Linux based media client. To that end, it has a T8100 CPU, 2GB of memory and a 7500rpm 100GB disk plugged in, plus external blue tooth and IR receivers ( Looking back, I should have just opted for the top end machine but I had the external things anyway). Maybe a little overpowered but hey, this is reasonably future proofed.

So, with Mythbuntu installed, plus a VirtualBox XP VM (for Netflix streaming), the system performs well. Video and audio are good and when running, the box is rock solid. This was an addition to an existing MythTV network so this is purely a client.

Pros: Excellent machine with enough power for my purposes. Quiet, well built, easy to assemble.

Cons: Under linux, there are a few suspend/resume issues for the display drivers but I'm working through those. Nothing else really - wakeOnLan would be nice..
